OBAMA ADDRESSES RACE IN AMERICA

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama rose to the occasion on Tuesday when he addressed allegations of racism against his pastor, Revered Jeremiah Wright, and announced his position on the state of race relations in America.

Among other things, Wright had stated that America brought the 9/11 attacks on itself with its foreign policy. After noting that Wright’s views were “profoundly distorted," and denounced them as “completely inexcusable” he also noted that he could not abandon his pastor just as he could not abandon black America.

But Obama’s remarks cut deeper, to the very heart of the complexities of the race question in the United States. Obama noted that America was experiencing a "racial stalemate" in which anger from many sides are real, and often unspoken. He went on to offer his belief that America needed to come together in order to heal the wounds that years of racial injustice has caused.

Obama’s speech has been hailed by his supporters and detractors alike as a brilliant statement on a difficult issue. Showing his usual talent to communicate and inspire, Obama has once again proven his presidential ability. Today marks another milestone on Obama’s march to the White House in November.
